He studied architecture and set design with professor J. Svoboda at the School of Applied Arts in Prague and later at the Akademie der bildenden Künste with prof. L. Egg in Vienna (1980-81 - Meisterschule für Bühnenbild). After studying in the USA he worked as a freelance set designer from 1982, as a set designer in Olomouc Theatre in 1983-84 and in Brno 1986-87. He has been working with the National Theatre in Prague since 1984 and has created a number of designs for operas and ballets. He also works on films, television programs and has recently started to take an interest in musicals (Dracula, the Mission). In 1988 he co-founded the experimental Opera Furore with Jiøí Nekvasil. Two years later they reorganized as Opera Mozart. He was the co-producer of all the productions put on by Opera Mozart (including Faust, Houslema do železa /With Violins to Iron/, Andy Warhol, The Best of Mozart, Figaro? Figaro!, Play Magic Flute, Don Juan Bastien). Since the beginning of the 1990s he has been managing an artistic agency, MozART Praha, which introduced the summer season at the Estates Theatre in co-operation with Opera Mozart (the last Production was Don Giovanni in 1998). Daniel Dvoøák also initiated the establishment of an ensemble which specialized in traditional Czech puppet theatre (Don Giovanni in the National theatre of Marionettes) and worked on a replica of a baroque theatre (Orfeo ed Euridice). He exhibits at home and abroad. Since July 1998 he has been the director of the Prague State Opera. |
